Partnerships between academic institutions and businesses unlock powerful opportunities for mutual growth, enabling organizations to tap into expert insights while offering students meaningful, hands-on experience. For Lay Law, a South African digital legal consultancy, collaborating with Tepper School Of Business at Carnegie Mellon University students came at a pivotal moment in the firm’s development. The engagement provided strategic support while showcasing the value of combining academic rigor with real-world problem-solving.
This collaboration began with a simple LinkedIn message from Maria Henning, our University Content Developer, during the planning phase for Tepper School’s the program in South Africa. Maria reached out to Richard Thompson, founder and legal consultant at Lay Law, inviting him to apply to the university’s consulting initiative. That message sparked a partnership, offering Tepper School students a real-world consulting experience and providing Lay Law with tailored strategic insights.Founded in 2023 in Cape Town, South Africa, Lay Law delivers affordable, efficient legal consultancy services for startups, entrepreneurs, freelancers, and small businesses. While the firm has experienced steady organic growth, it also faces common challenges of bootstrapped ventures: scaling operations, streamlining services, and sharpening its market positioning. For Richard, the collaboration offered more than just support, it was a chance to address those challenges through external expertise and gain fresh, data-driven perspectives.

The consulting project, led by a team of Tepper School MBA students, was designed to deliver strategic insights that would support Lay Law’s growth and scalability. The project objectives were thoughtfully crafted, offering a comprehensive and holistic approach to addressing the firm’s key challenges.
The team evaluated Lay Law’s current sole proprietorship model and assessed the feasibility of transitioning to a Pty Ltd company. Their analysis covered financial implications, legal requirements, operational impact, and outlined the steps necessary for a smooth transition.
Lay Law’s model, centered on transparent billing and customizable legal services, was analyzed for effectiveness and scalability. The team examined client needs, emerging market trends, and competitive dynamics to identify potential enhancements.
To support sustainable growth, the students proposed strategies to strengthen market positioning, diversify revenue streams, and refine marketing tactics. A particular focus was placed on leveraging LinkedIn as a powerful tool for professional outreach and brand visibility.
The team identified key areas for operational improvement, emphasizing the role of technology in streamlining workflows. Their recommendations included implementing productivity tools and process enhancements to improve both internal efficiency and the client experience.
In preparation for future expansion, the students provided guidance on forming strategic partnerships and created a draft pitch deck for potential investors. These resources positioned Lay Law to engage confidently with partners and funding sources.
The collaboration between Lay Law and the Tepper School student team blended virtual meetings, email exchanges, and an in-person workshop in Cape Town. This hybrid format enabled consistent communication and iterative feedback, ensuring that the final recommendations were both practical and closely aligned with Lay Law’s operational realities.
Reflecting on the experience, founder Richard Thompson shared, “The insights provided have helped me think differently about where to focus my energy to grow the business effectively. The students were collaborative, engaged, and always open to feedback.” Their recommendations included a competitor pricing analysis, marketing strategies, and ready-to-use templates that added immediate value to the firm.
A standout element of the project was its focus on leveraging technology to scale services. The proposed digital tools not only aligned with Lay Law’s identity as a modern, tech-forward consultancy but also positioned the firm for continued growth in an increasingly digital market landscape.

While Lay Law is still in the early stages of implementing the recommendations, the initial outcomes have been encouraging. The firm has already seen new leads and client engagements as a direct result of strategies developed during the collaboration. Richard Thompson noted that the project also prompted him to address key growth priorities sooner than planned, decisions that may prove pivotal for the firm’s long-term expansion.More importantly, the relationship between Lay Law and the student team has continued beyond the project’s conclusion. They remain connected on LinkedIn, maintaining an ongoing exchange of ideas and support. As these students embark on their professional journeys, they do so with broadened international networks and practical consulting experience.
